I use emacs for writing code, which is considered a bit old-school by many Java programmers. One of them recently commented that "watching someone use emacs is like watching ballet". Was that a compliment or not? "Graceful" and "efficient" come to mind, but maybe he just doesn't like watching ballet.

I'm going to go with something that seems like a source of awe and wonder to people who are really into it and a pointless waste of time and resources to everyone else.
Because it's so difficult you have to start at age 5, then when you've been doing it for 20 years it looks effortless to outsiders. And the Russians are better at it than anyone else...
